US Secretary of State Antony Blinken will travel to China next week on a visit that will take place after the preliminary approval this Saturday of an aid package for Taiwan valued at about 7.5 billion euros.
Biden will visit Beijing and Shanghai from Wednesday to Friday to “strengthen lines of communication and reduce the risk of miscalculation or conflict,” State Department sources confirm to the 'South China Morning Post'.
Blinken would spend “considerable time” with his counterpart, Wang Yi, to continue the “intensive diplomacy” initiated by the Secretary of State during his visit last year, and after approval this Saturday within the US House of Representatives of an aid shipment to Taiwan, embroiled in a historic territorial dispute with China that in recent months has seen a rise in tensions.
Blinken will also express, according to these sources, in a “clear and direct” manner the United States' concerns about what it sees as China's growing support for Russia's defense industrial base, as well as tensions in the Indo-Pacific and the Middle East. .
Blinken's trip will continue high-level visits to China that saw their latest episode from Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen earlier this month.
During her trip, Yellen expressed her concern about the difficulties that American companies encounter in China to compete on equal terms in the face of the imposition of access barriers and coercive measures, in addition to pointing out the risk posed by the Asian giant's overcapacity in different sectors. with the support of Beijing.
