Secretary of State Antony Blinken on Tuesday held a call with Venezuelan opposition leaders Edmundo González and María Corina Machado, telling them the United States will hold President Nicolás Maduro accountable for his actions.
Blinken said Washington would continue to advocate for “a return to democratic freedoms in Venezuela and work to ensure that the will of the voters is respected,” the State Department said in a statement.

Meanwhile, the opposition said its recounts show a victory for Edmundo González, who this month requested political asylum in Spainafter an arrest warrant was issued against him.
The United States and other Western countries have asked the Venezuelan authorities to disclose the details of the July 28 vote.
