The Secretary of State of the United States, Antony Blinken, spoke this Saturday with the Prime Minister of Armenia, Nikol Pashinyan, to underline “the importance of the peace talks between Armenia and Azerbaijan” and has promised “the continued support of the United States “.
As reported in a statement by the State Department spokesman, Matthew Miller, Blinken has also reiterated that “direct dialogue and diplomacy are the only path towards lasting peace in the South Caucasus” and wanted to thank the “continuous commitment ” of Pashiyan with the peace process.
Armenia and Azerbaijan have been involved in various confrontations in recent years, the last in 2020, over the control of Nagorno Karabagh, a territory with a majority Armenian population that has been a focus of conflict since it decided to separate in 1988 from the Azerbaijan region integrated into the Soviet Union.
However, in February of this year, Armenia delivered to Azerbaijan its final proposal for a peace agreement on this territory and since then both countries have been holding talks to carry it out.
Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev stated in early March this year that “now is the time for peace.” “The people of Azerbaijan have a moral right to seek revenge and I understand that, but my message is that we got revenge on the battlefield. We did not commit war crimes, like the Armenians, we did not commit genocide, like the Armenians against us, and we let’s come on the battlefield. Now is the time for peace,” he explained.
