The US “strongly supports a peaceful transition” of power, says the head of US diplomacy

The Secretary of the United States Department of State, Antony Blinken, maintained this Sunday that the Syrian people “finally have reasons for hope” after 14 years of conflict and has expressed Washington’s “firm” support for a “peaceful transition.” ” from power “through an inclusive process led by the Syrians” after the fall of Bashar al Assad’s regime.
Blinken has stated that “the Assad regime’s refusal since 2011 to engage in a credible political process and its dependence on brutal support from Russia and Iran inevitably led to its own collapse.” Likewise, he has shown his support for “international efforts to hold the Assad regime and its supporters accountable for the atrocities and abuses perpetrated against the Syrian people.”
The head of US diplomacy has indicated that they will follow “events closely as they develop” and that they will collaborate with their partners in the region, while he has indicated that he has “taken note of the statements made by rebel leaders in the last days” and that they will evaluate “not only his words but also his actions” as the days go by.
“We once again urge all actors to respect Human Rights, take all precautions to protect civilians and defend International Humanitarian Law,” reads a statement in which it points out that during the transition period the Syrian people “have everything the right to demand the preservation of state institutions, the resumption of key services and the protection of vulnerable communities.”
The United Kingdom Foreign Minister, David Lammy, has also celebrated that “finally” the “cruel regime” of Assad, which “committed brutal atrocities against the Syrian people”, has come to an end. “In the midst of uncertainty, it is essential to protect civilians, including minorities. Syrians deserve an inclusive political transition and a path to peace and security,” he said through his profile on the social network X.
For his part, the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), Filippo Grandi, has highlighted that “Syria is at a crossroads between peace and war, freedom and anarchy, prosperity and misery”, so “for their refugees, the turning point lies between repatriation and continued exile” and “everything depends on a peaceful transition, which respects the lives and aspirations of Syrians.”
This weekend the Bashar al Assad regime fell with the seizure of power in the country’s capital, Damascus, by a collective of rebel groups and the jihadist organization Hayat Tahrir al Sham, in the culmination of a dazzling offensive by twelve days.
