The Secretary of the US State Department, Antony Blinken, defended this Tuesday before his counterparts from Egypt, Qatar, Jordan and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) the need for “the Syrian people to decide the future” of the country through a ” inclusive and transparent process”, reiterating the need for “all” actors involved in the new government to protect and respect the rights of all civilians.
Blinken has addressed in different calls with each of them the latest events in Syria after the establishment of a provisional government in the hands of rebel groups that have overthrown Bashar al Assad’s regime in less than two weeks of offensive.
The head of US diplomacy has reiterated to the Egyptian Foreign Minister, Badr Abdelatty, the importance of “all” actors involved in the new present in Syria “respecting Human Rights, protecting religious and ethnic minorities and defending the International Humanitarian Law”.
Both have also defended that “the Syrian people decide the future of Syria”, for which it will be “an integrative and transparent process” that facilitates a “peaceful transition of power” and thereby guarantees the “stability and security” of the country. .
Blinken has reaffirmed this position before his counterpart and Qatari Prime Minister, Sheikh Mohamed Abdulrahman al Thani, with whom he has also insisted on the protection of civilians and the distribution of humanitarian aid. Likewise, he has conveyed the importance of “preventing Syria from being used as a base for terrorism or posing a threat to its neighbors, and ensuring that any chemical weapons arsenal is protected and safely destroyed.”
In a broader sense, both leaders have discussed the “renewed efforts to reach a ceasefire” in the Gaza Strip that “guarantees the release of all hostages” who remain in the enclave at the hands of the Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas). ) and have reviewed the status of the “cessation of hostilities” by Israel and Hezbollah in Lebanon, “underlining the need to continue supporting the Lebanese Armed Forces.”
Likewise, he has analyzed the situation with his Jordanian counterpart, Ayman Sadi, to whom he has stressed Washington’s support for the stability of Syria’s neighbors, including Jordan, during this transition period.
Blinken has conveyed these messages to the Emirati Foreign Minister, Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed al Nahyan, to whom he has also stressed “the importance of maintaining Syrian institutions and key services.”
“The Secretary has emphasized that it is incumbent upon all opposition groups seeking to play a role in Syria to demonstrate their commitment to the rights of all Syrians,” states a note from State Department spokesman Matthew Miller.
This round of calls from Blinken is part of the work announced by the State Department to address measures to support the Syrian people “as they decide their own path to the future,” which includes the provision of humanitarian assistance.
