US State Department Secretary Antony Blinken on Thursday extended his condolences to Omani Foreign Minister Badr al-Busaidi over the attack near a Shiite mosque in the capital Muscat that left six people dead and for which the Islamic State jihadist group claimed responsibility.
Blinken’s spokesman said he spoke to Albusaidi “to offer his condolences for the horrific shooting of worshippers at a mosque in Muscat,” to express “his solidarity with the people of Oman” and his gratitude “for the reinforcements of the Royal Oman Police during the attack.”
In addition, the two sides discussed ongoing diplomatic efforts to achieve a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip that includes the release of hostages and a significant and sustained increase in humanitarian assistance throughout Gaza. Finally, they underscored the strength of the bilateral relationship between the United States and Oman.
The attack took place late on Monday near the Ali bin Abi Talib mosque in the Uadi Kabir district, during the Ashura celebrations, which mark the tenth day of the month of Muharram, the first month of the Islamic calendar and a day of mourning for Shiites, who commemorate the death of Hussein bin Ali, grandson of Muhammad and third prophet of Islam.
