Blinken announces visa restrictions against those responsible for Georgia's foreign influence law

The Secretary of State criticizes the repression of the authorities, which are “undermining” the country’s democracy

The Secretary of the United States Department of State, Antony Blinken, has announced visa restrictions against those responsible for both the foreign agents law and the repression of protests against it, considering that they are “undermining” the country’s democracy.

“I announce a new visa restriction policy for those responsible for undermining democracy in Georgia, including in relation to the ‘foreign influence’ legislation proposed by the Georgian Dream (ruling party),” Blinken posted on his social media account. x.

In that sense, he has blamed Georgian Dream for repressing “the exercise of freedoms of association and expression”, for “stigmatizing organizations that serve the citizens of Georgia” and “preventing independent media from working to provide Georgians access to high-quality information,” according to a statement from the Secretary of State.

Following this, he criticized the repression exercised against those citizens who have protested against the law, and has assured that the security forces have used a “campaign of intimidation” and “violence” against peaceful protesters.

“In response to these actions, the State Department will implement a new visa restriction policy for Georgia against individuals responsible or complicit in undermining democracy in Georgia, as well as their family members. This includes individuals responsible for suppressing society. and freedom of peaceful assembly in Georgia through a campaign of violence or intimidation,” the letter reads.

Likewise, Blinken has recalled Washington’s support for democracy in the country, which is why he will begin an “exhaustive review” of bilateral relations between both countries.

“We remain hopeful that Georgia’s leaders will reconsider the bill and take steps to advance their nation’s democratic and Euro-Atlantic aspirations. As we review the relationship between our two countries, we will take into account Georgia’s actions in decide ours,” he added.

This law requires organizations, media outlets and similar entities that receive at least 20 percent of their funding from abroad to register as “agents defending the interests of foreign forces.” Failure to register will be subject to administrative sanctions.
