Since its launch on August 20, Black Myth: Wukong is estimated to have grossed $700 million, a figure that can only be eclipsed by Call of Duty, which amassed a franchise-record $800 million in three days with Modern Warfare II, and Grand Theft Auto V, which surpassed $1 billion in the same time over a decade ago. Cyberpunk 2077, meanwhile, has generated €700 million including the Phantom Liberty expansion and took a year and a half to reach 18 million copies. Elden Ring took just over six months to reach 17.5 million units.
Black Myth: Wukong goes head to head with the pillars of the video game industry with a budget of 70 million dollars. This is a low figure if we take into account that games like Cyberpunk 2077 have a budget of 260 million euros, while Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 cost 315 million dollars.
The success of Black Myth: Wukong is remarkable for many reasons. For one, it’s the project of a Chinese company that hardly anyone knew about, and yet it has managed to produce a big-budget game that’s on par with the best offerings from the US, Europe or Japan. “Black Myth: Wukong not only shows that we have top-notch creative ability, but that we can also tell a good story with Chinese elements,” says Daniel Wu. For Wu, developing Wukong was an act of faith. Before this title, Game Science had been a bit of a flop in the mobile gaming industry. free-to-play.
Black Myth: Wukong has arrived in stores after six years of development and we won’t have to wait that long for new content. Game Science is already working on an expansion of which we don’t have details yet, while the long-term plan is to turn the game into a franchise based on Chinese mythology.
