For a game to be successful, it must meet several requirements and among them is usually a good story. However, there are those who do not give due importance to this element and apparently the BioWare study was one of them.
In the United States, a strike of the Writers Union of the United States is taking place in order to better recognize the work of writers or screenwriters.
Taking advantage of this movement, the veteran screenwriter David Gaider spoke about this issue and how it is also present in video games.
“In games you even see this attitude among those who want to go into the business. ‘I REALLY don’t have any skills… I can’t do art, I can’t program, so I figure I’m going to become a screenwriter?’ better than quality assurance!’ As if writing games doesn’t require any skills that need development.”

Veteran developer pointed contempt for BioWare
What’s interesting is that Gaider went further, confessing that this can be seen even in companies like BioWare, which “built its reputation on good stories and characters,” but slowly transitioned from that to being a company that resented or looked down on writers. to such a degree that he saw them as a “drag” for the company.
“Suddenly all the people in charge were wondering was, ‘How come we lack writing?’ A good story just happens, like a magic wand, rather than something that needs support and priority.” the developer commented sarcastically.
In case you missed it: Gaider revealed that Electronic Arts never understood why it fared better for Dragon Age what to mass effect.
Gaider mentioned that it may be saying a lot, but it’s what he felt at the company until he left it in 2016, after spending 17 years working for it on games like Dragon Age: Origins, Dragon Age 2 and Dragon Age: Inquisition. The veteran developer is currently the co-founder and creative director of Summerfall Games.
“In the end they can say they like good writing—whether it’s in a game, in a movie, in an online article, or whatever—but if you don’t value it enough to prioritize and support it… and, yeah, pay the writers what they deserve… that’s not what everyone else is hearing,” the creative concluded.
Maybe that sounds like a heavy charge, but it’s what I distinctly felt up until I left in 2016. Suddenly everyone in charge was asking was “how do we have LESS writing?” A good story would simply happen, via magic wand, rather than be something that needed support and priority.
