In early June, Billie Eilish released a new song. That track, “TV,” apparently referenced the Johnny Depp and Amber Heard libel trial which at the time had just concluded in court with the verdict of the jury. Meanwhile, the Supreme Court was in the midst of a landmark decision on the future of the precedent set by Roe v. Wade about abortion, but it was Depp and Heard who dominated the news cycle at the time. From what Billie Eilish is saying now, she frankly wasn’t happy about it.
Of course, Eilish doesn’t specifically mention Amber Heard or Johnny Depp on “TV.” Instead, her lyrics strongly imply that it’s about the libel trial, as he sings in the unreleased song, “The internet’s gone crazy watching movie stars on trial / As they overturn Roe v. wade”. Now, the singer talks about the viral lyrics and the intense feelings she was dealing with when she put pen to paper and came up with the new song, just like she said. NME in a new cover story:
Actually, this isn’t the first time Billie Eilish has opened up about her internet-related feelings, though it is the first time she’s brought up two major movie stars to prove her point. In fact, Eilish has been very honest about the disconnect she feels on the internet., particularly when fan hatred is involved. She said during the pandemic:
Eilish also made it clear that she’s not that open on social media. as it may seem. As for “TV,” Billie Eilish said in the interview that she wanted to remember a period of time when she could just “go back to playing a little guitar song and feel like I used to.” You can watch the full performance below.
the Mass reaction to Heard and Depp’s trial is still ongoingbut in the last days after the The Supreme Court made its decision to revoke the right to abortion in the US, the topic is also drawing attention in the conversation, which is apparently what the singer was hoping to provoke with “TV.” It’s unclear if the unreleased song will make her third album, as the singer says she’s trying not to “freak out” on herself by deeming more music too difficult just yet. Eilish is currently on her “Happier Than Ever” tour..
