Big companies keep the M&A market alive in August

The big companies have kept the mergers and acquisitions market alive in Spain during the month of August, in line with the aggregate amount of 62,635 million euros of the operations recorded in the previous months, 38% compared to the same period in 2023.

Companies like Iberdrola, Indra, Fluidra, Aedas Homes or Europastry They have continued this trend in August, livening up the market with the announcement of new acquisitions throughout the month.

The most notable transaction was that carried out by Iberdrola, which announced at the beginning of August the acquisition of 88% of the English electricity company Electricity North West (ENW) for around 2.5 billion euros, which means valuing the company including debt at around 5 billion euros. With this operation, the United Kingdom becomes the company’s leading country in terms of network asset base, with around 14 billion euros, followed by the United States with 13.3 billion euros.

If one sector stands out above the rest, this has been the sector real estateone of the most active in the mergers and acquisitions market, with a total of 340 transactions until July, according to TTR data. In August, the announcement of the acquisition of 100% of Inmobiliaria Espacio by Aedas Homes stood out. The company explained in a statement that, with this investment, it increases its capacity and product offering in good locations and provides a lot of value for its shareholders.

In other sectors, Europastry announced earlier this month the acquisition of Dutch company De Groot Edelgebak, a distributor of frozen bakery products for the foodservice channel, as part of its expansion in central Europe. According to the company, this acquisition will strengthen its presence and that of its products in the foodservice channel (which includes, among others, restaurants, cafes, bakeries and pastry chains), one of its strategic objectives for the coming years.

That same day, Indra also announced the acquisition of Deimos, Elecnor’s technology subsidiary specializing in the development of space missions and satellite integration, to strengthen the portfolio of its new aerospace company, according to a statement from the company.

Another company that has gone on a shopping spree in August is Fluidra, which has announced two acquisitions. At the beginning of August, the company specialising in pool and wellness equipment announced an agreement to purchase 100% of the NCWG group, one of the main distributors of pool products in Portugal. A few days later, it announced the purchase of Chadson Engineering, a leading designer and manufacturer of granular and regenerative filtration systems in Australia.
