President Joe Biden will mark the 21st anniversary of the 9/11 attacks on Sunday with remarks and the laying of a wreath at the Pentagon outside Washington, the White House said Tuesday.
The day will commemorate the 2001 terrorist attacks when hijackers seized control of commercial airliners to use as missiles, crashing into the World Trade Center in New York, the Pentagon, in Arlington, Virginia, and a field in Pennsylvania. Nearly 3,000 people were killed in the al-Qaeda attacks. The United States and its allies responded by launching the war in Afghanistan.
Jill Biden, the first lady, will speak Sunday at the site of the Flight 93 memorial in Shanksville, Pennsylvania. Vice President Kamala Harris and her husband will travel to New York City for a remembrance ceremony at the National September 11th Memorial.
