Biden urges Congress to approve aid for Ukraine and Israel

US President Joe Biden on Wednesday expressed strong support for providing more military aid to Ukraine and Israel, as well as humanitarian assistance for Palestinians in Gaza, after House Speaker Mike Johnson advanced that lawmakers will vote on the funding packages Saturday night.

“The House should approve the package this week and the Senate should do the same quickly,” he said. “I will sign this text into law immediately to send a message to the world: we support our friends and we will not allow Iran or Russia to succeed,” the Democratic president said.

Republican Johnson had wavered for weeks over whether to call a vote on foreign aid, and some right-wing lawmakers in his caucus opposed more aid for Ukraine's two-year fight against the russian invasion and they threatened to try to remove him from the presidency if he proceeded with a vote.

Biden alleged in a statement: “Israel is facing unprecedented attacks from Iran, and Ukraine is facing continued bombing from Russia that has escalated dramatically over the past month.”

The American president expressed his opinion in an article in the newspaper Wall Street Journalwhere he called the Senate-passed version of the Ukraine-Israel aid package “strong and sensible,” adding: “It should no longer be held hostage by a small group of extremist Republican members of the House of Representatives.”

The American leader said that Russian President Vladimir Putin “wants to subjugate the people of Ukraine and absorb their nation into a new Russian empire. “The government of Iran wants to destroy Israel forever, to erase the only Jewish state in the world from the map.”
