The President of the United States, Joe Biden, announced this Monday that he will travel to the island of Ireland, both the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland, coinciding with the 25th anniversary of the signing of the Good Friday Agreement, which ended to decades of political violence.
“I intend to go to Northern Ireland and the Republic,” Biden said Monday in conversation with British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, during an event in San Diego, California.
Sunak invited Biden taking advantage of the joint press conference. “I’m looking forward to talking to him and, also importantly, inviting him to Northern Ireland. I hope he can do it and we can celebrate the anniversary of the Good Friday Agreement,” Sunak said.
“I know it is something very special and personal for you. We would love to have you there,” added Sunak, referring to Biden’s Irish family ancestry.
“Twenty-five years? It seems like yesterday. I intend to go to Northern Ireland and the Republic,” the White House tenant replied. The agreement was signed on April 10, 1998.
