The president of the United States, Joe Biden, met this Thursday with his Ukrainian counterpart, Volodymyr Zelensky, to talk about his “victory plan” to defeat Russia after Washington announced a new aid package for kyiv valued at 7.9 billion dollars.

The White House has announced a $2.4 billion package to provide kyiv with additional air defense, as well as unmanned aerial systems and air-to-ground munitions. It will also withdraw $5.5 billion from US stocks for Ukraine.

Zelensky stressed in the framework of the meeting that Ukraine and the United States have been together “from the first moments of this terrible Russian invasion.” “Their determination is incredibly important for us to prevail,” he said, according to the Ukrainian Presidency.

In addition to discussing increased aid from Washington, the Ukrainian president has promised that they will work together to align perspectives in order to implement the “plan to achieve victory over Russia.”

“The two leaders reviewed the diplomatic, economic and military aspects of President Zelensky’s plan and tasked their teams with intensive consultations on next steps,” the White House said.

Zelensky, who is in the United States for the 79th United Nations General Assembly, met this Thursday with Vice President Kamala Harris, as well as members of the US Congress, including the leaders of the Senate, Democrat Chuck Schumer and the Republican Mitch McConnell.

Although the details of this “victory plan” are unknown, the Ukrainian president has been insistent that Western partners must give kyiv the go-ahead to use long-distance weapons over Russian territory.

The meeting also takes place in a context of uncertainty ahead of the November presidential elections in the United States, which predict, if former President Donald Trump wins, an eventual change in policy with respect to Ukraine.
