Lisa Franchetti becomes the first woman nominated to command the US Army. Franchetti, 59, has been deputy chief of Naval Operations for almost a year. Among her previous posts, she was commander of the US Naval Forces in Korea, deputy commander of those forces in Europe and Africa, or director of Strategy, Plans and Policy for the Joint Chiefs of Staff.
Joe Biden has highlighted his 38 years of service to the nation from her.
His appointment requires the approval of the Senate.
