Between barbecues and celebrations with members of the Army, President Joe Biden commemorates the United States Independence Day this Thursday with a series of events that seek toreassure Democrats of their ability to lead the country.
As part of the 4th of July traditionsthe president and first lady Jill Biden will host families of active and retired military personnel at the White House to honor their service.
Biden is expected to deliver remarks from the South Lawn of the presidential residence, which Vice President Kamala Harris will also attend.
The moves come amid pressure on the president to drop his re-election campaign following his poor showing in the debate with his Republican rival, former President Donald Trump.
As calls for him to step aside grow from some Democrats, experts say Biden needs to demonstrate resilience and mental acuity to voters and donors.
Despite that, Biden vowed to continue seeking re-election. “I’m going to run. I’m the leader of the Democratic Party. Nobody is going to take me out,” Biden said, according to a senior aide who posted his statement on the social media site X.
Biden will close the week with an interview on ABC News on Friday and that same day will travel to Wisconsin for a campaign rally with hundreds of supporters. The capital of that state, considered key in the presidential elections next November, will host the Republican National Convention from July 15 to 19, where former President Donald Trump’s candidacy is expected to be officially confirmed.
