The US president, Joe Biden, intends to “clearly address” with the Chinese president, Xi Jinping, issues such as Taiwan, Ukraine or Human Rights in China in the meeting that both leaders will hold this Monday in Bali.
“I think I have always had clear conversations with him. There have never been misunderstandings of what, where each one of us is, and I think that this is of critical importance in our relationship,” Biden explained from Phnom Penh, Cambodia, before leaving. to Bali to participate in the G-20 summit.
This will be the first face-to-face meeting between the two leaders since Biden was elected president of the United States, although they have had several telephone conversations.
Biden has explained that he hopes the appointment will serve to establish “red lines.” “I know Xi Jinping. I’ve spent more time with him than any other world leader. I know him well. He knows me. There’s no… almost no misunderstandings. We just have to figure out where the red lines are and what things are the most important for each one of us for the next two years”, he argued.
Xi arrives strengthened after last month achieving a historic second re-election as head of the Asian country that will allow him to continue at the helm of China for five more years and with a political environment made up mostly of allies. “His circumstances of him at his house have changed, to state the obvious,” Biden has indicated about Xi.
Precisely Taiwan –an internal matter for China– will be one of the possible points of friction, although the relationship with Russia or the North Korean ballistic tests could also arise.
