Biden goes to Florida and sympathizes with those affected by Ian

On Wednesday, President Joe Biden and his wife, First Lady Jill Biden, traveled to Fort Myers, a city located in Lee County, southwest Florida, United States, to assess the damage caused by Hurricane Ian.

“We’re not leaving until the job is complete,” Biden said, speaking of the Administration’s support for affected locations.

From the emergency declarationAt the request of Governor Ron DeSantis, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA, for its acronym in English) mobilized a search and rescue team of “never before seen” proportions at the scene, Biden said.

“The number one priority was saving lives,” said the president and reported that after the damage assessment, in Lee County, one of the most affected and where the category 4 hurricane made landfall, 2,400 structures have been examined in order to to warn of any danger and thus grant the necessary aid.

According to data from the authorities, on Tuesday more than 100 people had been counted dead after the meteorological phenomenon.

Biden insisted on the guidelines given by FEMA for people to register in order to determine who is eligible and what type of help they can receive.

He also spoke about the complaints received due to the delay in serving the petitioners, due to the accumulation of people in need.

At least 3,800 people were rescued and 200,000 families have registered to receive urgent assistance, such as medicine, food and others.

Biden praised the work done by DeSantis. “What the governor has done has been remarkable,” she concluded.

DeSantis reported that the Florida Power Light (FPL) electric company has already restored 97% of the power in the state and announced that Internet service has received a strong boost from billionaire Elon Musk.

“We have deployed 375 Starlink internet devices that Elon Musk has provided to reposition his satellites,” he said.
