Biden expresses his support to Lula after the assault in Brasilia, invites him to Washington

The president of the United States, Joe Biden, expressed his support for his Brazilian counterpart, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, on Monday through a phone call and invited him to visit Washington in early February.

According to a White House statement, the US president “conveyed the unwavering support of the United States for democracy in Brazil and the free will of the Brazilian people.” Likewise, he condemned “the violence and the attack on democratic institutions and the peaceful transfer of power,” referring to the acts recorded on sunday when supporters of former President Jair Bolsonaro attacked public institutions.

The text also points out that Biden and Lula committed to working on binational issues, such as climate change, economic development, and peace and security.

The White House also reported that the Brazilian president accepted the invitation to visit Washington, in early February, “to carry out in-depth consultations on a broad-ranging shared agenda.”

biden already said on Sunday that the situation in Brazil is “unacceptable”after supporters of far-right former president Jair Bolsonaro invaded Congress, the Planalto Palace and the country’s Supreme Court.
