Hundreds of sensitive US defense strategy documents have been leaked onto social media, posing a significant security risk to the entire country. Biden does not confirm their veracity but his concern indicates that they are authentic.
“I am concerned that this has happened,” President Joe Biden said at a press conference in Ireland, where he is on an official trip. The president added that the ongoing investigation is “coming closer” to some conclusions about how the leak of classified documents detailing situations as sensitive as Washington’s plans for the war in Ukraine or confidential analyzes about its allies could have occurred.
The US Justice Department has opened a criminal investigation and the Pentagon considers the leak to be a “very serious risk” to the country’s national security.
The US authorities have not publicly confirmed the authenticity of those files and the authenticity was not verified by any independent source either.
For now, the only version of the leak has been given by the Washington Post, which claims that the documents were leaked by a young gun fan, who shared them in a private group on the Discord platform.
The young man, who used the pseudonym “OG”, published for months hundreds of copied pages of documents from the military base where he worked, according to the newspaper.
The published documents account for the concerns of US intelligence services regarding the feasibility of a Ukrainian counteroffensive against Russian forces, due to training and supply problems.
