In his fight for what he has defined as “the battle for the soul of the nation”, the president of the United States, Joe Biden, called on Thursday for greater forcefulness when defending democracy in the country.
“For a long time, we’ve made sure that American democracy is guaranteed, but it’s not. We have to defend it, protect it,” Biden said in a late-night primetime speech in Philadelphia.
Biden has insisted on protecting US institutions amid the investigations that the Department of Justice is carrying out after the registration held on August 8 at the residence of former Republican President Donald Trump.
In that order, he accused the MAGA movement -by the acronym of former President Trump’s slogan, “Make America Great Again“- of promoting extremism, although he said he was sure that not all Republicans are going in that direction, but only Trump supporters.
“Much of what is happening in our country today is not normal,” he said. “Donald Trump and the MAGA Republicans represent extremism that threatens the very foundation of our Republic.”
Likewise, Biden highlighted the efforts of the administration for the approval by Congress of legislative projects aimed at greater control of firearms, improvements in health services and the reduction of the price of medicines, for which he asked for the vote of their co-religionists.
Finally, he returned to the need for unity among Americans in the face of the aforementioned “extremism” of the Republican wing.
“We must remember what we are: We are the United States of America.”
Republicans respond
Shortly before Biden’s speech, the Republican leader of the House of Representatives, Kevin McCarthy, accused the president of precisely dividing the country, in addition to not facing crime and inflation.
“Instead of trying to bring our country together to solve these challenges, President Biden has chosen to divide, demean and disparage his fellow Americans, simply because they disagree with his policies,” McCarthy said in a speech in the city. Biden’s hometown of Scranton, Pennsylvania.
McCarthy pointed to campaign efforts for the upcoming midterm elections, to be held in November.
“Democrats in Washington have no plan to make life better. The American people deserve a Congress that is focused on their needs. Republicans have a plan for a new direction that will get our country back on track. Our plan is a Compromise.” with America,” he exclaimed.
