US President Joe Biden has announced a new military aid package for Ukraine worth $225 million (207 million euros) during a meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in Washington.

“I am proud to announce a new security assistance package for Ukraine,” he said at a meeting with Zelensky on the sidelines of the summit of the Atlantic Alliance, in which Ukraine plays a central role.

Biden stressed to Zelensky — who has held numerous bilateral meetings over the course of these two days of the summit — that the United States is already working with its allies “to ensure that Ukraine can fly the F-16 fighter jets.”

Zelensky thanked Biden for the new security package. “Thank you for your support and thank you to our soldiers. It was hard work, but they are doing it and together we are preserving Ukraine’s independence and freedom,” he added.

The package includes a Patriot missile battery; ammunition for advanced surface-to-air missile systems; Stinger anti-aircraft missiles; Javelin and AT-4 anti-armor systems, as well as ammunition for high-mobility artillery rocket systems, among other types of weaponry.

“This is the eighth package of security assistance the President has authorized to assist Ukraine (…) We will deploy this new assistance as quickly as possible to strengthen Ukraine’s defense of its territory and its people,” Secretary of State Antony Blinken said in a statement.

Zelensky and his wife Olena arrived in Washington on Monday. The Ukrainian president kicked off his visit on Tuesday with a ceremony to honor the victims of the Holodomor (1932-1933) at a memorial near the US Capitol.
