Biden and Sheinbaum talk on call about Mexico-US economic and trade cooperation

The president of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum, and her counterpart from the United States, Joe Biden, held on Friday her first contact since the president took office this week, through a call in which they addressed issues of bilateral cooperation in economic, cultural and commercial matters.

Biden, who will leave office in January, said on Monday that he will meet “soon” with his Mexican counterpart, who thanked the US president for his congratulations after his inauguration on Tuesday.

Both countries, trading partners along with Canada in the North American trade agreement, USMCA, have had differences over a controversial reform to the Mexican judicial system recently enacted.

“I received a call from the president of the United States, Joseph Biden,” Sheinbaum said on her X account. “I appreciate his congratulations after assuming office as the first president of Mexico,” she added.

The US president also published a message on the same social network informing of the call and congratulating his Mexican counterpart on her inauguration, which he described as “historic”, being the first woman to become president of the Latin American nation.

“I look forward to continuing this strong, collaborative partnership that will promote prosperity and security in both countries,” Biden said.

In addition to the judicial reform, which establishes, among other things, the election by popular vote of judges, magistrates and ministers and which has caused concern among investors and hit the markets, both partners have a delicate agenda to resolve.

Mexico City and Washington await the resolution of a dispute settlement panel in the USMCA on the use of transgenic corn in the Latin American nation, in addition to the search for ways to resolve the challenge of the enormous migratory flows from Central America, South America and other regions towards US territory.
