Aug. 2 (EUROPA PRESS) –
US President Joe Biden and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu have discussed “new military deployments” to protect Israel following Israeli strikes in Lebanon and Iran that killed Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh and Hezbollah’s number two, Fuad Shukr.
“(Biden) has discussed efforts to support Israel’s defense against threats, including ballistic missiles and drones, including new U.S. defensive military deployments,” reads a White House statement in which the U.S. president has stressed “the importance of ongoing efforts to reduce broader tensions” in the region.
He also reaffirmed during a call between the two, which was also attended by the Vice President of the United States, Kamala Harris, Washington’s commitment “to the security of Israel against all threats from Iran, including the terrorist groups that represent it,” in reference to Hamas, Hezbollah and the Yemeni Houthi rebels.
Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah has warned that his group has entered a “new phase” in its confrontation with Israel following the death of Haniyeh earlier this week in Iran in an attack attributed to the Israeli army, which has yet to comment on the incident. Hamas and its partners, including Lebanon and Iran, have warned of a strong response against Israel for the incident.
