The Italian Foreign Minister, Antonio Tajani, has assured that the leader of Forza Italia, Silvio Berlusconi, has not had contact with the Russian President, Vladimir Putin, since the start of the war and has affirmed that the Russian leader has been a “deep disappointment” for the former Italian prime minister.
Tajani has tried to respond in this way to the controversy over Berlusconi’s statements in which he stated that President Volodimir Zelenski “sufficed to stop attacking the two autonomous republics of Donbas and this would not have happened”, assuring that he judged him “very , very negatively” because of it.
Since the start of the war, Putin and Berlusconi “have not had any contact” because the Italian feels “disappointed by an interlocutor who changed his attitude”, Tajani assured, adding that “Forza Italia does not hesitate to condemn the Russian invasion of Ukraine”, according to the Sky tg24 chain.
Zelenski criticized the Italian’s statements on Tuesday, during Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni’s visit to Kiev: “Berlusconi’s house has never been bombed, tanks have never arrived in his garden, nobody has killed his relatives, he has never had to pack his suitcase at three in the morning and this is all thanks to the brotherly love of Russia”.
Last week, the European People’s Party canceled a conference that it had planned to organize next June in Naples, in the south of Italy, after Berlusconi’s statements were made public, reiterating the European party’s support for Ukraine.
