Benin releases 30 opponents during Macron's visit

July 28 (EUROPA PRESS) –

The Justice of Benin has announced this Wednesday that some thirty opponents detained during the presidential elections of April 2021 who had been marred by violence have been released during a visit by the President of France, Emmanuel Macron, to the African country.

Thirty detainees for crimes committed during the April 2021 electoral period have been released and placed under judicial supervision by the Benin Court for the Repression of Economic Crimes and Terrorism (CRIET, for its French acronym), Frissons Radio reported.

It should be noted that among the political prisoners released from prison and placed under judicial control are, among others, the former minister Houdou Ali and the activist Nadine Okoumassou, as reported by ‘La Nouvelle Tribune’.

Macron and his Beninese counterpart, Patrice Talon, in the meeting they have held have addressed political issues during their private exchanges, without giving more details.

Benin is a country that the Elysee considers “increasingly connected to Sahelian issues”.
