Belém hosted the XXXIII General Assembly of MINURVI focused on the urban agenda and housing as strategic priorities in the face of the climate crisis

On December 12 and 13, 2024, the city of Belém hosted the thirty-third General Assembly of the Forum of Ministers and Highest Authorities of Housing and Urban Planning in Latin America and the Caribbean (MINURVI). This important meeting was led by the Ministry of Cities of Brazil, in its capacity as presidency of the Forum during 2024, with the technical support of the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) and UN-Habitat, in their joint role. of Technical Secretariat of MINURVI.

The Assembly brought together decision makers, leaders and experts from the region to analyze the challenges and opportunities in housing and sustainable urban development, promoting cooperation and the exchange of experiences between member countries. In this edition, the central theme revolved around the urban agenda and housing as strategic pillars to confront the climate crisis that puts Latin America and the Caribbean in a situation of great vulnerability.

The first day of the event was dedicated to multi-stakeholder dialogues that involved top authorities, representatives of civil society, academia, international organizations and development banks. During these sessions, key topics were addressed such as:

• Comprehensive strategies against climate change.
• Adequate housing and urban planning as key axes to advance the 2030 Agenda. Urban renewal and regeneration as drivers of sustainability.
• Land management and innovative financing mechanisms.
• Inclusive and sustainable urban development in the Amazon Region.

The second day was focused on a ministerial dialogue with the highest housing and urban planning authorities. This space allowed us to reach a common declaration on the priorities, objectives and challenges for the period 2025. Likewise, the election of the new president and executive committee of the Forum for the next period was carried out. The presidency remained in the hands of Barbados, while Chile and Honduras assumed the first and second vice-presidencies, respectively. The XXXIII General Assembly of MINURVI reaffirmed its commitment to the development of more inclusive, resilient, productive and sustainable cities, positioning housing and urban development as key elements to confront the climate crisis and promote well-being in the region.
