Belarusian soldiers have returned to their country this Saturday after receiving operational training on the use of the Iskander-M tactical missile system, capable of transporting nuclear warheads, a month after Russia announced its intention to deploy this class of systems in its neighboring country. .

“The crews of the Iskander operational tactical missile system have completed practical training in Russia,” the Russian Defense Ministry announced in a statement collected by the official Belarusian news agency Belta.

“Among other things, the crew studied in detail the issues of the Iskander-M’s content and use of tactical nuclear weapons,” the statement added.

Russia has not specified specific dates on the transfer of tactical nuclear weapons to Belarus, but Russian President Vladimir Putin has estimated that construction of the storage facilities should be complete by early July, in what would be the first deployment. of part of Russia’s nuclear arsenal outside its borders since the dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1991.
