The Chinese Defense Minister, Dong Jun, charged this Sunday against the United States for its position on Taiwan, blaming its Executive for “emptying” Beijing’s one-China policy on the island and for “deceiving” a country in the South China Sea.
In his first global security forum as head of Chinese diplomacy, Dong Jun criticized Washington for its efforts in favor of legal initiatives related to Taiwan, for continuing arms sales and for continuing to maintain “illegal” official contacts with Taipei .
“They are violating their commitment to China when they establish diplomatic relations,” Dong criticized in reference to the US. “They continue to test China’s red lines,” she added and this was reported by the Bloomberg agency.
This is how Dong expressed himself during his speech at the Shangri-La Dialogue meeting in Singapore, where he criticized the “(American) strategy of slicing salami.”
Likewise, the Chinese official has denounced that “a certain country” has been “emboldened by outside forces” and has allowed the United States to deploy a missile system in the region. Although he has not made a direct reference to the Philippines, this intervention has been a response to the country’s leader, Ferdinand Marcos Jr., who this Friday reaffirmed his national claims in the disputed South China Sea.
Dong was appointed Defense Minister last December to replace his predecessor in office, who suddenly disappeared from the public scene. Now, much of his international efforts are focused on relations with the United States with the aim of reducing the risk of conflict in Taiwan and the disputed South China Sea, which are the two main sources of confrontation today.
The 63-year-old Chinese Foreign Minister met this Friday with his American counterpart, Lloyd Austin, during what were their first face-to-face conversations, to address issues such as Chinese military activity around Taiwan, the clashes between Philippine and Chinese ships in the South China Sea and Beijing’s support for Russian aggression in Ukraine.
After the meeting, both parties referred to the conversations held in positive terms, calling them “frank and constructive”, and agreed to maintain communication despite their differences.
“Although the US and China have different development paths, the countries should not seek confrontation with each other,” Dong declared in this regard, shielding himself from the statements of Austin, who spent most of his speech this Saturday praising the Washington’s efforts to strengthen the region and protect itself from Beijing.
