“At the Bank of Mexico we are concerned about the general price level of the economy. Monetary policy acts in this sense so that the change between relative prices occurs in an orderly manner and does not affect price formation,” he said.
The deputy governor said that although the June inflation figure was the highest in a year, by 4.98% “It’s not necessarily going to be a permanent effect on the economy.”
“The bank’s forecast tells us that the specific target of 3% will be reached in the second half of 2025,” he said.
Regarding environmental criteria, Mejía highlighted the sustainable taxonomy presented by the Ministry of Finance last March.
“The Bank of Mexico acted in a timely manner. With respect to environmental criteria, we added ESG criteria, which means that it is taking the lead,” he said.
He said the central bank already has a roadmap for assessing long-term climate risks that will give it a clearer picture of possible structural changes arising from environmental risks.
