Bangladesh hits record number of dengue infections this year

Bangladesh has reported 1,623 new dengue cases in the 24 hours to Saturday morning, the highest number of hospitalizations in one day for the mosquito-borne disease this year.

During this period, in addition, seven more deaths from this disease have been reported, bringing the death toll from the infection to 100, as reported by the Ministry of Health of Bangladesh and reported by the newspaper ‘The Daliy Star’.

Of the new patients, 1,168 have had to be admitted to hospitals in the country’s capital, Dhaka, and the rest outside of it. A total of 4,947 dengue patients, including 3,238 in the capital, are receiving treatment at hospitals across the country.

So far, the Ministry of Health has registered 19,454 cases of dengue and 14,407 recoveries this year. The country registered 281 deaths from dengue in 2022, the highest number recorded after the 179 deaths reported in 2019. In addition, it registered 62,423 dengue cases and 61,971 recoveries last year.

Dengue is common in tropical areas of the world, and outbreaks are typical during the rainy seasons. Some of the most common symptoms of this disease, which is transmitted by the Aedes aegypti mosquito, are fever, drowsiness, lack of energy, irritability, rash, vomiting, and unusual bleeding.
