Bangladesh government confirms at least 147 dead during wave of protests

Jul 28. (EUROPA PRESS) –

The Bangladesh government confirmed on Sunday that at least 147 people have died during protests against the now-suspended quota system for civil servants, which sparked anger among student movements who considered it an act of discrimination.

The figure confirmed by Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan is roughly in line with the figures provided in recent days by national media amid a telecommunications blackout that was finally lifted on Sunday.

The minister has named protesters, police officers and even members of the ruling Awami League party, although he has not yet provided an exact tally of the dead, the Bangladeshi website New Age reports.

Jan has taken the opportunity to clarify that this balance is also provisional in nature and does not rule out that it will increase in the coming hours. Recognized media such as the newspaper ‘Prothom Alo’ raise the death toll to 210.
