The next step is to send the text approved by both chambers of Congress to the Colombian president, Gustavo Petro, a declared anti-bullfighting fan, so that he can sign it andand become Law of the Republic.

The ban on bullfighting was approved, after several years of attempts, on May 28 in the Colombian Congress, amid the celebrations of those who had championed the animal fight for a decade and criticism from the bullfighting sector.

Petro and his Government celebrated the decision of the Legislature: “Those who have fun with the death of animals will end up having fun with the death of human beings; like those who burn books will end up burning human beings“said the Colombian president at the time.

Bullfights, traditionally popular in Colombia, were losing followers and currently there are only them in the bullrings of La Santamaría, in Bogotá; in Cañaveralejo, Cali and in the Plaza de Toros de Manizales, a city that has the largest fans in the country, as well as in some provincial plazas.
