Sony has teamed up with Backbone, a company known for its controllers, to introduce the Backbone One: PlayStation Edition, an officially licensed mobile controller for iPhone users. The device has the same features as the original Backbone One from 2020. Its differences lie in a design inspired by the DualSense controller and show off the traditional PlayStation buttons. In any case, it is still the first iPhone mobile control that has an official PlayStation license.

Why is Sony interested in having an official iPhone controller? The answer is Remote Play. The company wants to offer a licensed solution that makes it easier for its console players to play their PlayStation games on an iOS mobile. For those who do not know it, the Remote Play function allows you to control PS5 and PS4 from a device, which can be a mobile or a computer, to play the titles of both consoles from another room or away from home. This option has possibly added interest with the arrival of the new PS Plus, whose Premium subscription includes a catalog of games in streaming.

Being a PlayStation-licensed controller doesn’t prevent this Backbone One from working seamlessly on other services like Xbox Game Pass Ultimate, Apple Arcade, Stadia, or Xbox streaming. Just keep in mind that the buttons are the PlayStation buttons, triangle, square, circle and cross, instead of A, B, X and Y. Beyond the PlayStation buttons, the controller has a Lightning port and a connector 3.5mm headphone jack. In TheVerge They have already been able to test the controller and confirm that it is the same Backbone One from 2020 with the differences already mentioned.

For those interested, the price of Backbone One: PlayStation Edition is the same as the rest of the editions: 119.99 euros.

“Backbone One is the essential PlayStation gaming companion on iPhone,” says Maneet Khaira, CEO of Backbone. “If you have broadband internet access and a PS5 or PS4 console, connect an iPhone to Backbone One and start gaming. Instantly play your PS5 and PS4 titles with the power of the PS Remote Play app, whether you’re on the go or anywhere in the house. Backbone also works great with games from the App Store and other supported game streaming services. controls, including Genshin Impact, Fantasian, Call of Duty: Mobile, and many more.”
