The bird flu epidemic advances in the American continent, spread by migratory birds. And its impact on wildlife puts veterinarians on alert. The virus has decimated 3% of the population of sea lions in Peru and is now wreaking havoc on the Chilean coasts. Nearly 9,000 wild animals have died so far this year on the Chilean coasts.
After being first detected in North America, the H5N1 bird flu virus spread through 17 countries on the continent with migratory birds.
To such an extent that today it represents a danger to the health of both domestic and wild animals, indicated the Pan American Health Organization.
The outbreak has led to the death of 52 million poultry in the US in 2022. And in South America, it particularly affects wildlife, endangering marine biodiversity.
Medical authorities recommend keeping your distance from animals stranded on the beaches. And keep pets away from wild animals suspected of carrying avian influenza.
