In 2022, a detective game with quite peculiar visuals was released, which without making too much noise became one of the highest-rated titles of the year. Its name is The Case of the Golden Idol, and two years later comes the sequel: The Rise of the Golden Idol, which from today is available for PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series and PC through Steam (where you will find a demo) in exchange for 19.99 euros. There is also a version for iOS and Android in the Netflix catalog, while the one for Nintendo Switch has suffered a last-minute delay and will finally hit the eShop on November 14.

The Rise of the Golden Idol is a game that follows in the footsteps of the first part, and that means that we are faced with a detective title with a known basic structure where black humor occupies an important place. The important change comes with the context. With the sequel we leave the 17th century behind and travel more than 200 years to the 1970s to investigate 20 cases of crime and death that are somehow connected. The visuals have evolved, but the distinctive artistic direction that the Color Gray Games development team gave in the first game in the series is maintained in the sequel.

Despite the distance in years between the two games, The Rise of the Golden Idol follows the idol’s story and maintains the members of the greedy Cloudsley family among its characters, but with a new context that opens the door to situations , totally different characters and settings. Some believed that the legend of the idol was a myth, but this will change. “Discover the mysterious forces that connect a tenacious treasure hunter, a team of scientists, members of a cult in search of enlightenment, and speculative businessmen drawn to the omnipotent artifact,” says the game’s description.

As detectives, players will be able to freely explore each crime scene, while using logic to create theories. As you gather clues and analyze your discoveries, you’ll get closer to the truth and be able to determine what happened, why, and who was responsible. Recording each scene well will be crucial to finding all the details. This research process will be enlivened with puzzles integrated into the narrative, which are one of the hallmarks of the playable proposal of the Golden Idol saga. There are also new features, such as a redesigned interface and a new type of puzzle at the end of each chapter that allows you to look back at previous deductions to find connections.

The future of The Rise of the Golden Idol involves an additional content plan similar to that of The Case of the Golden Idol. Color Gray Games is working on four new standalone mysteries that will be available between the first and third quarters of 2025.
