In mid-July Nintendo surprised us with a dark teaser which was later discovered as Emio – The Smiler: Famicom Detective Club, the new installment of a saga whose origin dates back to 1988 and which had been forgotten for 30 years. With this title, which is available today for Switch, the Japanese company is launching a release schedule that also includes Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom (September 26), Super Mario Party Jamboree (October 17) and Mario & Luigi: Brotherly Connection (November 7).

Emio – The Smiley: Famicom Detective Club is an adventure, mystery, and suspense game where players take on the role of a detective assistant working at the Utsugi Detective Agency. The action kicks into high gear when Eisuke Sasaki, a high school student, is found dead with a paper bag decorated with a smiley face on his head. It’s a scene that’s not new to the police, as it’s reminiscent of the one seen in a series of unsolved murders that took place 18 years earlier. The scene also evokes the urban legend of Emio the Smiley. Is Emio real and back, or is he a copycat?

After the police enlist the help of the Utsugi Detective Agency, our protagonist must investigate the death of Eisuke Sasaki and along the way look for possible links to past cases. The detective’s job consists of examining evidence and questioning the victim’s classmates as well as other people related to the case in order to gather clues. Crime scenes and other locations of interest must also be visited in search of possible clues. All information is compiled in a notebook where everything that has been discovered so far can be consulted.

Behind Emio – The Smiler: Famicom Detective Club we find Yoshio Sakamoto, the producer and screenwriter of the series. He is also one of the creators of Metroid, a franchise in which he has participated in numerous roles, including designer, director and producer. His last work with this saga was in Metroid Dread (2021) developed by the Spanish studio MercurySteam. “It is the first sequel [de Famicom Detective Club] “over 30 years, so I took care of everything: the story, the script, the cinematics… down to the smallest detail,” Sakamoto said when Nintendo presented the title.

Those interested in trying out Emio – The Smiler: Famicom Detective Club will find a demo in the eShop that includes the first episodes. Progress can be transferred to the full version of the game.
