( Spanish) — Mexican authorities reported eight deaths this Friday so far in the hot season that began on March 19 and is expected to last until October. In a statement from the Ministry of Health, they detailed that three deaths were registered in Veracruz, two in Quintana Roo, another two in Sonora and one in Oaxaca.
According to the health authorities, in the week from June 3 to 10, 69 cases of heat stroke associated with extreme temperatures and two deaths were reported, one from heat stroke and the other from dehydration.
The Secretariat reiterated that it is “essential” to avoid exposing yourself to high temperatures since it can have health consequences such as heat stroke, dehydration and sunburn. Specialists recommend that the population stay hydrated by consuming at least two liters of previously boiled, disinfected or bottled water a day. In addition, it is requested to avoid prolonged exposure to the sun, especially between 11 in the morning and 3 in the afternoon.
For this Friday, the National Water Commission (Conagua) forecasts maximum temperatures above 45 °C in 12 entities of the country that are under the third heat wave of the year.
