Authorities from the Government of Colombia, the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) and the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) held an information meeting today with representatives of the diplomatic corps accredited in Bogotá to share the details of the Fifth Meeting of the Regional Conference on Population and Developmentwhich will take place on July 3 and 4 at the Cartagena de Indias Convention Center.
The meeting, headed by Elizabeth Taylor Jay, Vice Minister of Multilateral Affairs of Colombia, was attended by Ambassadors and other diplomatic representatives of the member states and associates of ECLAC. Also participating were Ambassador Adriana Mendoza, Manager of the Fifth Regional Conference on Population and Development; Luis Mora, Resident Representative of UNFPA, and Luis Fidel Yáñez, Secretary of the Commission, ECLAC.
During the meeting, Luis F. Yáñez took the floor to announce the preparations for the Fifth Meeting of the Regional Conference on Population and Developmentwhich will be preceded, on July 2, by parallel events and civil society activities.
He specified that at the intergovernmental meeting high representatives of the government, regional and international institutions, private sector, academia and civil society will address the achievements of the Montevideo Consensus and the challenges for its 30-year implementation of the Program of Action of the International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD).
Likewise, ECLAC will present the document entitled Population, development and rights in Latin America and the Caribbeanwhich constitutes the second regional report on the implementation of the Montevideo Consensus and analyzes progress in the implementation of the priority measures of the agreement ten years after its adoption.
The meeting will have two thematic panels in which member countries and other actors will share their experiences and challenges for the implementation of the 30-year Montevideo Consensus of the Program of Action of the International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD) and They will analyze the progress and challenges to guarantee the full exercise of the rights of people with disabilities within the framework of the population and development agenda.
At the end of the meeting, the members of the diplomatic corps thanked the call and expressed their willingness to continue strengthening regional cooperation spaces.
In its role as Secretariat, and with the purpose of ensuring that everyone has information on the organization and logistics of the Fifth Meeting of the Conference, ECLAC has planned two other information meetings with governments and civil society, on June 11 and 12, respectively.
