Austria’s Foreign Minister, Alexander Schallenberg, took over this Friday as interim chancellor of the country until a new government is formed. The far-right Freedom Party is in negotiations with the conservatives to form a new coalition Executive.
Schallenberg, 55, thus assumes the duties of Karl Nehammer, who resigned this past weekend after failing in his attempt to close a coalition with socialists and conservatives.
It is not the first time that Schallenberg has taken charge of Austria. He was already chancellor for less than two months at the end of 2021 after the resignation of Sebastian Kurz. Nehammer later took over and he returned to the Foreign Ministry.
