Austrian citizen jailed in Iran released

Iranian authorities have released an Austrian citizen detained for alleged crimes committed in the province of West Azerbaijan in the far northwest of Iran, Iran’s judicial news agency Mizan reported.

The president of the provincial Supreme Court, Nasser Atbati, has announced the release of Christian Weber, noting that he “was in prison for crimes committed” in the area, although he did not give details about them.

He also said that he had been handed over to the Austrian ambassador to Iran, Wolf Dietrich Heim, for his departure and transfer. The diplomat expressed his “appreciation and gratitude to the Iranian judicial system” and to the president of the Supreme Court of West Azerbaijan.
