Australia's Prime Minister calls for the release of Wikileaks founder Julian Assange

May 21. () –

The Prime Minister of Australia, Anthony Albanese, called this Tuesday for the release of Wikileaks founder Julian Assange, after the London High Court ruled in his favor and allowed him to appeal against his extradition order to the United States, where he is accused of disseminating secret documents.

“We continue to work constructively. Our position has been very clear and the same as that I had as leader of the opposition and as prime minister. It is enough,” he said in statements to the press, according to the transcript provided by his office through their website.

Thus, the Australian Prime Minister has reiterated that the imprisonment and judicial process against Assange “is of no use” and has stressed that the Australian authorities “continue to work very closely to achieve results”, in reference to his release.

The decision of the British Justice gives Assange, an Australian citizen, the possibility of calling into question the guarantees promised from Washington about how his possible trial will be carried out after being extradited. The journalist has defended at all times that the information revealed in 2010 served to publicize war crimes committed by the United States.

The United Kingdom Government already gave the green light to the transfer in June 2022, but Assange, who spent nearly seven years taking refuge in the Ecuadorian Embassy in London, has tried to block it in every possible way. He is charged with violating the US Espionage Act and faces up to 175 years in prison.
