Australia's foreign minister criticizes Putin's 'desperate' nuclear threats

Sep. 24 () –

Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong has described Putin’s threats to use nuclear weapons in the Ukraine conflict as “weak and desperate” in her speech at the United Nations Assembly on Saturday.

“We cannot accept a situation where large countries determine the fate of smaller countries. That is why Russia’s illegal and immoral invasion of Ukraine cannot be normalized and cannot be minimized,” said Senator Wong who has assured that the opposite would be to assume that a larger territory decides if the other has the right to exist.

In this sense, he has demanded that China and the international community “increase the pressure on Moscow” so that it puts an end to the invasion that began in February. Although he has also claimed Australia’s role in resolving the conflict, which should not be relegated to the great powers, according to ABC News Australia.

“Australia has always sought a world without nuclear weapons and we will redouble our efforts to achieve this goal and strengthen the non-proliferation regime,” he said, stressing the importance of international collaboration to hold Russia accountable.
