Australia’s centre-left government has decided to drop its preliminary plan to include questions about sexual and gender identity in the next census in 2026, sparking a heated debate on Thursday, according to a poll. report AFP.
While supporters of the idea hoped the consultations would provide “a more accurate snapshot of who Australians are and who they love,” the outlet reported, Finance Minister Jim Chalmers said Thursday the decision was made to avoid an unpleasant and potentially divisive public debate.
“If this decision stands, the government could expect LGBTQ* people and our families to be excluded from the next census,” warned Sydney independent MP Alex Greenwich.
