US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin has promised his Ukrainian counterpart Rustem Umerov a new military aid package worth $2.3 billion (2.143 billion euros) for kyiv as part of the war against Russia.
“This package, under the Presidential Withdrawal Authority (PDA), will provide additional defensive interceptors, anti-tank weapons and other critical munitions from U.S. inventories,” Austin said on the occasion of Umerov’s visit to Washington on Tuesday.
It will also allow the Biden administration to supply “more Patriot and NASAMS air defense interceptors.” “Ukraine is not alone and the United States will never waver in our support (for kyiv),” Austin said, according to a Pentagon statement.
For his part, Umerov thanked the US Secretary of Defense for the “comprehensive assistance” and support that the United States has provided to Ukraine. “With this support, we have stopped Russia, we have stopped the aggression towards people, towards our values, our national interests,” he concluded.
This comes after the US House of Representatives approved in April a multi-trillion-dollar aid package to Ukraine, Israel and Taiwan worth a total of around 90 billion euros, more than half of which goes to kyiv.
The measure, approved in April, which was paralyzed by disputes between Democrats and Republicans, will allow the U.S. arsenals to be replenished, which have been depleted after years of constant military supplies to Ukraine.
