At least two people, including the brother of a candidate, have died during the election day held this Sunday in the Pakistani state of Sindh.
The incidents have caused the suspension of voting in some polling stations, as reported by the Pakistan Electoral Commission, which has indicated that the tables will reopen at a time yet to be determined to compensate for this closure.
“I can confirm the death of Qaiser, the brother of our candidate in Asghar Gandapur, Tando Adam. Qaiser has been violently attacked and has died,” said a spokesman for the Pakistan Justice Movement (PTI) Mushtaq Junejo, quoted by the daily. Pakistani ‘Dawn’.
Qaiser Gandapur has died in the town of Sanghar, where there have been major protests over his death and even the main roads have been cut.
The second fatality has been identified as Abdul Qadir Yagirani, who died in the Sukkur region, as confirmed by the Police. Yagirani died after a riot at the Allah Jurio Jagirani polling station. Four more people were injured.
The Police have reported incidents in towns such as Hashim Jasjeli, Nawabshah, Jacobabad, Tharparkar or Kashmore despite the warning of the Inspector General of the Sindh Police, Ghulam Nabi Memon, who had promised a “tough hand” during the vote.
Memon stressed that despite these “sporadic incidents”, the situation is now “under control” with the deployment of 48,000 security forces.
