At least two civilians injured during a new night of chaos in the Indian state of Manipur

June 17 (EUROPA PRESS) –

At least two civilians have been injured during a new night of violence in the Indian state of Manipur, the scene early last month of a wave of intercommunal violence that left between 60 and a hundred dead, depending on the sources.

The latest incidents began around 9:45 p.m. on Friday in the towns of Kwakta, Kangvai and Imphal, where the injured were registered, whose residents heard around 400 or 500 shots throughout the night.

The security forces have also reported “multiple incidents of mob accumulation and attempted vandalism and property arson” by officials of the Indian government party, the Indian People’s Party (Bharatiya Janata or BJP).

The May riots began during a march called by the All Manipur Tribal Students Union (ATSUM) in support of the native Naga and Kuki communities after authorities launched a move to grant tribal status to the metei community, majority in the indian stadium.

Mobs last night attempted to vandalize the residence of BJP State Chairman Adhikarimayum Sharda Devi and set fire to the Thongju Assembly Constituency Headquarters.

A joint team of the Army, together with riflemen from the neighboring state of Assam, the Rapid Action Forces and the local Police had to end up deployed to try to contain the situation, reports the News18 chain.
