At least three dead and several missing in shipwreck in southern Democratic Republic of Congo

September 16 (EUROPA PRESS) –

At least three people have died and several others have gone missing on Monday after a shipwreck on the Kwango River near the town of the same name in the southwest of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

The boat, which had left the town of Tembo in Kasongolunda, was heading to Kinshasa, the capital of the African country, according to information from local authorities to the Congolese news portal Actualité.

Kwango Mayor Jean-Baptiste Nkololo said about 150 people were on board the boat at the time of the incident and confirmed that just under half of them had been rescued.

The survivors, who have managed to be evacuated by rescue teams, are being identified. “Some are still under water,” lamented Nkololo.
