At least ten dead, including a child, and 30 injured in an attack blamed on Russia in northwest Syria

MADRID 17 Oct. () –

At least ten people have been killed, including a child, and another 30 have been injured, half of them minors, in a bombing blamed on Russian warplanes against the surroundings of the Syrian city of Idlib (northwest), according to The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights has reported.

The organization, based in London and with informants in the country, has indicated that the bombings have affected a sawmill, a furniture workshop and an olive pressing company on the outskirts of Idlib. In total, Russian planes have carried out nearly thirty air attacks during the day in the rural areas of Idlib and Latakia, targeting both civilian and military areas.

Russia is one of the main international supporters of Syrian President Bashar al Assad, and its military intervention in 2015 allowed government forces to repel rebel advances and once again take the initiative on the battlefield.

Idlib province is dominated by Hayat Tahrir al Sham (HTS) – heir to the al Nusra Front, a former affiliate of Al Qaeda in Syria – and therefore remains outside the control of the Syrian authorities. Various armed groups also operate in the region that have support from Türkiye, which has also deployed soldiers in this province.
